NASA Goes Platinum with Swinerton Builders Silicon Valley

Swinerton Builders, NASA and other dignitaries including Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi broke ground on August 25th on the $20-million, 50,000-square-foot, steel-frame Sustainability Base building at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View, California. Sustainability Base will be a research facility for studying sustainability on Earth and is designed to achieve LEED-NC v2.2 Platinum Certification. Swinerton Builders was in part chosen as the General Contractor by NASA due to their extensive LEED expertise, which includes 69 LEED projects, over $1.6 billion of LEED projects and more than 325 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff (over 25% of their workforce).

Green features of Sustainability Base will include complete heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems utilizing ground source heat pumps; solar hot-water systems; and an advanced lighting system. In addition to the structure the project also includes site preparation, utilities, installation of 72 geothermal wells, parking, California native landscaping, hardscaping and the development of a stormwater management system. In order to achieve sustainability, the building will have zero net energy consumption and use 90 percent less potable water than conventionally built buildings. Once complete, Sustainability Base is expected to be the greenest and highest-performing building in the federal government's portfolio.

Swinerton Builders Hawaii Greens Sony Open

Swinerton Builders Hawaii has been making a splash in the media lately with their latest commitment to sustainability - greening the Sony Open.  As one of Hawaii's leading green experts, Swinerton was enlisted on the Greenside Lanai project, positioned along Waialae's Par 5 "Aloha" 9th hole. It is the first sustainability-focused, air-conditioned hospitality complex on the PGA TOUR and demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating environmentally supportive measures in temporary, as well as permanent, environments.

"The Sony Open Greenside Lanai will be constructed almost entirely of re-used or recycled materials," said Bill Krill, Operations Manager and Green Building Chairman, Swinerton Builders. "Our goal is to provide an eco-friendly model that can be adapted quite easily for commercial or residential use."

Swinerton Surpasses 250 LEED Accredited Professionals

Green building leader Swinerton Inc. announced that it has surpassed its goal to credential 250 LEED Accredited Professionals within the organization.

Swinerton's LEED 250 program started in 2007 when Swinerton had just 45 LEED Accredited Professionals. Through a concentrated internal training effort and friendly competition between operating regions Swinerton now has more than 264 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff. Most noteworthy is that the LEED Accredited Professionals, which comprise more than 20% of Swinerton's workforce, range from frontline project superintendents and engineers, to senior estimators, business development managers and senior executives, including the President of Swinerton Builders.

"As more of our clients demand LEED-certified projects our project teams are able to provide both LEED expertise and first-hand knowledge of cost-effective green building solutions." said Grant French, Corporate Sustainability Manager for Swinerton Inc.

LEED Accredited Professional designation is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated, through a third-party test, a thorough understanding of Green Building Practices and Principles and familiarity with LEED requirements, resources and processes. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a suite of standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to measure and validate green design and construction practices. The LEED Accredited Professional test is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute.

Swinerton Ranked 5th in Nation in ENR's Top Green Contractor Ranking

This year's Top 100 Green Contractors generated $22.77 billion from projects that either were registered or certified with a major thirdparty environmental standards or ratings group. That amount accounted for 20.1% of the total contracting revenue from this group.

Highlights of Swinerton's waste reduction efforts include:

  • 80% average recovery rate of construction debris at all of its projects
  • Approximately 24,000 tons of construction debris recycled

HMH Builders, a division of Swinerton, also won a 2008 WRAP award.

Swinerton Green Builder of the Year

Swinerton has been named Green Builder of the Year at the San Francisco Business Times inaugural Green Business Awards. Among all award winners, Swinerton was the only one to be singled out as the stand-alone winner without any runner-ups - a distinction we take great pride in.

Our continued success in sustainability is due to the combined commitment and effort of all 1,300 Swinerton employee-owners, which include over 180 LEED Accredited Professionals.

Swinerton has long been at the forefront of green building - from the adaptive re-use of Ghirardelli Square in the mid-1960's, to building our first green roof in 1974, to our LEED Gold Headquarters in 2001 and California's first LEED hotel in 2007 - and we continue to lead the industry in this regard.
